The Fantastic Paradise (1966), Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely

In front of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm is The Fantastic Paradise | Le Paradis fantastique (1966), a suite of sculptures, both still and kinetic, by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. The Tinguely works are currently the subject of a dedicated multi-year restoration supported by a grant from Bank of America, but the Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures also required small repairs before the full restoration is unveiled. Alongside My Bundgaard, I filled numerous losses across the Paradise sculptures with Fin-Spackel Heinotasoite two-component plastic padding, and then sanded and inpainted the fills with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) paints given to the museum by the artist's former assistant. We also removed significantly damaged restoration paint layers from one of the Nanas in the fountain, which will re-painted before the reopening of the Paradise in 2025.
